My spark plugs are dead and I can’t change them because Mazda. A bit hard to explain but they made sure you don’t install plugs that were not designed for it. And because tuner car, my plugs are not the ones originally designed for it, they are much shorter. I need a rotary special extra thin wall plug socket that I had to order from Atkins Rotary and that cost 60$. Yep, 60$ for a spark plug socket. Fuck me.
Other than that, most reliable car I’ve ever owned! (Yes I can hardly believe it myself too lol)

My first na FC was also the most reliable car I’ve owned..(apart from my brand new daily of course)
But it never left me stranded like my celica or foxbody. Only issues I had was stupid shit like worn out suspension parts and rusted exhaust. Even when the coolant seal blew it still started right up.

Could you not use a normal spark plug socket and a grinder? Had to do that when changing the plugs on my mum’s Honda Stream as the tubes were too narrow for a standard socket.
Then you could return your $60 ‘special tool’!

It’s a bit different...
Here is how spark plugs are and the possible modification to the engine you need to do for them. Since my engine is rarer than unicorns, I’ve decided not to modify it that way.
Do you see that cover around the plug hole on the right? That’s my problem. Grinding it out is a possiblity, like it’s been done the center rotor housing. The plugs I have to install fully go inside and are then impossible to grab with a regular tool and you need a VERY, VERY thin walled socket. This is why I need something like that that I just can’t do myself
http://atkinsrotary.com/store/Thin-Wal… (+15$ shipping to Japan lol)
Those are regular Facom socket or something, that have been CNC’ed to fit inside

There is only
one
thing wrong with my RX-7 as well...but its a bit more serious. Oil control rings.
I’ll finally be doing the long planned rebuild over the next weeks. I had planned to start on my birthday, yesterday, and that’s when the problem went from startup only to raver grade smoke machine. The universe is keeping me honest i guess. I’ve had a complete Atkins rebuild kit on my shelf for a month now. My much needed special end-nut socket has arrived as well...all 54mm of it and only 28$...size-wise mine is quite the better bargain than your Atkins one.
Also, congrats on your R&T Article, haha...i’ll be telling people i ‘knew’ you before you hit big time! Here is a bit of fanfare to celebrate!

haha, thx :). Another article should be published fairly soon. And that infamous blue smoke... not something you want to see.
And good deal on that flywheel socket, I might need one some day too :)

I think it will be the most fun i’ve had in ages to rebuild this motor. My 7 came to me ‘dead’ with the seal already leaking some, but i’ve kept it alive on that bad seal two years so far! Not unexpected at all it’s not my ‘daily’ so i have the freedom to be patient with my man-sized lego kit.
